Are you just about learn about the viking age or another historical period in school? The Viking Times offerst curriculum adapted pedagogical programs for schools where the mixture of theortical, practical and playfullness is the key. Welcome to a different kind of history lesson!

We offer two different lessons which can be combined or ordered separately. We recommend our visitors to start out with "Traveling viking" and afterwards follow up with "Viking for a day". By doing so you'll get a knowledge base before your visit with us and the students will be able to assimilate the knowledge better. If you book both programs you'll also get a discounted price.

We make visists in the classroom and tell stories about life in the past! What did they eat? Where did they live? What did they work with? What was it like for the children? With the help of tricky assignments we explore the concept of source criticism (or information evaluation) - How can we know all this? An exciting lecture about the past and now, archeology, and history!

Bookable activities:

Herb garden workshop, medicine during the viking age

What kind of diseases existed and how did they cure them? Together we will explore the herbal garden - the drug store of the viking age! We will talk about cures - such as garlic in the ear to cure otitis or mustard seeds in your shoes against cold feet - we will also try different kinds of wrappers.

Rune workshop

How did you contact people you couldn't meet eye to eye? Text messages from the viking age didn't really exist - or did they? Together we will explore the mysterious runes and learn to carve secret messages on something called "rune sticks".

Sagas and mythology

Our storyteller guides you into the realm of sagas and talk about the function of stories during the viking age. We also talk about the storyteller's role as a news carrier.

Games

The students will get to experience actual viking games. We will talk about why the played these games and who played them. It was about physical exercise that were played by adults and children alike.

Valkommen

Visit us and become a viking for a day! Witness a farmstead, built with historic materials and techniques, surrounded by a 25 hectare area overrun by nature. When you arrive you will be taken on a guided tour around the area with interesting history and stories about life 1000 years ago. After the tour you will get the chance to participate in 4 different activities.

Cooking

What did they eat during the viking age? Together we will bake real viking bread and the students will be taught how to grind flour from rye that has been grown on our fields. Everyone will get the opportunity to have a taste and we will talk about the different produce and from where they got it.

Archery

Which weapons were used during the viking age and by whom? Could everyone afford a sword? What did a viking helmet actually look like and how heavy is chain mail? The students will get to practice archery.

Games

Jewelry from the viking age

Try making your own viking inspired jewelry! The students get to try out jewelcrafting, for example casting Thor's hammer in clay slate form and making their own necklaces. At the same time we will also talk about the pagan symbols and their meaning.

Textile

Enter our textile house and learn more about the craft of textile and clothes from the viking age. What kinds of textiles were used the most? What materials were used to retrieve certain dyes? Try spinning and carding wool, weaving and hurling your own bracelet in beautiful colours.
